Common questions
What if I lose my phone?
Your vault stays locked on it. It opens only with Face ID or the phone's passcode, and we can't open it either.
To get your vault back on a new phone, you need an encrypted backup you made before you lost it. Install SealNest on the new phone, open the backup file there, and type its passphrase.
Without a backup, a lost phone means a lost vault, and we can't get it back for you. The next answer shows how to make one.
- If you have another device with SealNest, such as an iPad: sign in on your new phone, then approve it from the other device. Then, on the other device, open Settings, tap your account, then Devices, and remove the lost phone, so it stops syncing.
- If you have no other device: sign in on your new phone and choose Use Your Recovery Code. Type the 24-character vault recovery code you wrote down when you turned on sync.
If your vault is set to Device-Only, there is no copy with us, so only another device, or an encrypted backup you made, can bring it back.
Saved scans stay on the device where you saved them, so they don't come back with your vault. Keep the paper too.
How do I back up my vault?
In SealNest, open Settings, then, under Import and Export, tap Export Passwords. Under Backup:
- Choose a passphrase of at least 12 characters, and type it twice. Four or more random words are strong and easy to remember.
- Tap Save Backup, and keep the file in Files or iCloud Drive.
Nobody can open the backup without the passphrase: not us, and not you if you forget it. Write it down somewhere safe.
To bring everything back on a new phone, install SealNest and open the backup file there. It asks for your passphrase, shows you what it found, and brings back your passwords, passkeys, verification codes, cards, IDs and folders. It brings back your saved scans too. Saved scans aren't in the backup.
What are recovery codes?
SealNest has two kinds, and they do different things:
- Your vault recovery code: 24 characters SealNest makes when you turn on sync. It brings your vault to a new device if you lose every other one. We never see it, so we can't give it back to you. You can make a new one in Settings, under your account.
- Your account recovery codes: 10 codes SealNest shows when you set up an authenticator. Each one works once, in place of the authenticator, to sign in if you lose it.
Keep both somewhere safe and offline, such as on paper at home. Never send them to anyone, us included.
How does the breach check work?
On your phone, SealNest makes a scrambled fingerprint of each password (a SHA-1 hash) and sends only its first 5 characters to Pwned Passwords, a free public list of leaked passwords run by Have I Been Pwned. The answer is every leaked fingerprint that starts with those 5 characters, with decoys mixed in, and your phone looks for a match itself. Your passwords never leave your phone. Have I Been Pwned sees your phone's internet address. The request goes through our server, so Have I Been Pwned sees only our server's address.
If a password turns up, SealNest marks it "Found in a data breach", and Fix These walks you through changing it. To turn the check off, open Settings, then Security, and switch off Check for Breached Passwords.
How do I delete my account?
In SealNest, open Settings, tap your account at the top, then Delete Account. There are three steps:
- SealNest lists what will be deleted, with a link to Manage Subscription.
- It offers you one last export of your passwords.
- It emails you a code, then asks for Face ID.
Your account, the locked copy of your vault with us, and the passwords on that device are deleted at once. Deleting your account doesn't cancel an App Store subscription, so cancel that first. What deleting covers
How do I delete what you keep about me?
SealNest needs no account, so we hold nothing about you to delete. Your vault is on your device, in your hands. If you have written to us, ask and we will delete your messages.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose SealNest, then Cancel Subscription (Apple's steps). Or, in SealNest, open Settings, tap your account, then Manage Subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your plan renews, or before your free trial ends, to avoid the next charge. Your plan stays until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app, or your account, doesn't cancel it. For a refund, ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How much is it?
The Free plan costs nothing.
Planned launch pricing. Paid plans aren't available yet.
Free is free for good, on your phone. Personal is $39.99 a year or $3.99 a month, and adds every device and sharing. Family is $59.99 a year or $5.99 a month, for up to 6 people. The yearly plans start with a 14-day free trial. What each plan includes
What happens if I stop paying?
Nothing you saved is taken away. Every device keeps syncing for 30 days while you choose which devices stay on Free. After that, the others stop syncing, and nothing on any device is deleted.
Can you read my passwords?
No. Your vault is encrypted on your device with a key we never have. We can't read your passwords, usernames, websites, notes or documents, and we couldn't unlock your vault even if we wanted to. With sync on, we keep a locked copy we can't open. How SealNest protects your data
Do you sell my data?
No. We don't sell or share your data. We can't sell what we can't see. No ads. No trackers.
How do I turn on AutoFill?
On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then General, then AutoFill & Passwords, and turn on SealNest. (On iOS 17, it is under Settings, then Passwords, then Password Options.)
Then, when you tap a password box in an app or on a website, SealNest offers your saved login above the keyboard, and asks for Face ID before it fills.
How do I bring my passwords in?
In SealNest, open Settings, then, under Import and Export, tap Import Passwords. SealNest can bring in your passwords from Apple Passwords, Google, 1Password, Bitwarden or LastPass, or from any app that can save them to a file. From Apple Passwords, your passkeys come too.
Can I take my passwords out?
Yes, any time. In SealNest, open Settings, then, under Import and Export, tap Export Passwords. It makes a file of your logins (a CSV) that other password managers can read. Keep it safe: anyone who opens it can read your passwords. For everything else, make an encrypted backup, which only SealNest can open.
What is Lost Wallet?
One screen of every card and ID you saved, with the number to call if your wallet is lost or stolen: from the back of your card, or from the issuer's or the government's own page. Mark each one Reported, then Replaced, and scan the new one in. Your progress stays on your device. It's free.
Does it work on Mac, Windows or Android?
SealNest runs on iPhone and iPad. Without an account, each device keeps its own vault. With a SealNest account and sync, your devices share one vault: Free covers your phone, and Personal covers every device.
I didn't get my sign-in code.
Codes come from SealNest and last 10 minutes. Check your spam or junk folder. Each new code replaces the one before, so use the newest. If you have asked for many codes, wait a while: there is a daily limit, so nobody can flood your inbox.
Lost your authenticator? Sign in with one of your account recovery codes instead.
What does "Powered by ReelNest" mean?
SealNest is made by the same developer as ReelNest, a home media app, and is built on some of the same technology. They are separate apps. SealNest has its own accounts, separate from ReelNest.
